Gratitude Opens Doors: A Reflection on Music, Faith, and Perseverance

How being thankful for my talent—and even for difficult moments—has shaped my musical journey.

The Gift of Being Grateful

I believe gratitude is one of the greatest virtues a person can cultivate, especially a musician. Our work requires dedication, imagination, and perseverance, but it also requires the humility to recognize that we do not walk this journey alone. When arrogance and pride consume us, it becomes difficult to appreciate the gifts we have received or the people who have helped us along the way.

Throughout my musical career, I have witnessed how gratitude opens doors. The more thankful I become, the more receptive I feel to creativity, opportunity, and the blessings that life brings. For me, gratitude creates the mental peace that allows inspiration to flow and gives me the energy to keep going.

Giving Thanks During Difficult Moments

It is easy to express gratitude when things are going well. The greater challenge is finding something to appreciate while facing adversity, disappointment, or uncertainty. I know that this can be difficult, but I believe it is possible to develop that perspective with patience and reflection.

Giving thanks during a difficult season does not mean that I enjoy the hardship or pretend it does not hurt. It means I try to recognize what the experience can teach me and how it might help me grow. Some of the moments I would never have chosen have challenged me to become stronger, more thoughtful, and more persistent as a person and a musician.

When I approach adversity with gratitude, I can look beyond my immediate frustration. I begin to ask what I can learn, what I can improve, and where I should direct my next steps. That change in perspective helps me keep moving instead of becoming consumed by resentment.

“Gracias al Padre Dios por mi Talento”

Several years ago, I composed a Catholic song in the style of a psalm called Gracias al Padre Dios por mi Talento—“Thank You, God the Father, for My Talent.” Its lyrics express my conviction that my musical gift comes from God and carries a responsibility to serve others. Through music, I want to inspire, educate, and bring love and happiness to young people and families.

In the song, I give thanks for creativity, guidance, sustenance, and protection throughout my journey. I also express gratitude for the strength to persevere during dark moments and to continue walking when my talent is not welcomed. For me, the song is a personal testimony of faith and a reminder that the purpose of my talent reaches beyond my own recognition.

Gratitude Beyond Religious Belief

My faith is central to how I express gratitude, but I do not believe a person must be religious to appreciate life. Waking up, breathing, hearing music, or having another opportunity to begin again can each become a reason to give thanks. Gratitude starts when I pause long enough to recognize something I might otherwise take for granted.

That awareness also helps me make room for humility and empathy. When I remember how much I have received, I become more conscious of what others may be experiencing and what I can offer them. My talent becomes an opportunity to contribute, and every performance becomes another chance to share something meaningful.

The Energy to Keep Going

I think of gratitude as peace of mind and fuel for perseverance. Without it, difficulties can feel heavier, and pride can make it harder to listen, learn, or connect with others. Being thankful helps me return to the purpose that first gave meaning to my music.

My advice to young musicians is to cultivate gratitude alongside their talent. Give thanks for progress, for those who support you, and for the lessons that emerge from difficult moments. I continue to believe that a grateful heart opens doors—within ourselves, in our relationships, and in the music we have yet to create.
